Local climate protection in Germany: political demands of cities and towns

According to a statement in September by 30 representatives of cities and towns at a political meeting in Berlin, Germany’s local climate protection objectives cannot be reached by municipalities alone. German mayors and city councillors debated during the third meeting of the Covenant Club on local climate protection and the insufficient support from national and European frameworks.

© Climate AllianceRepresentatives among others from the cities of Aachen, Berlin, Bonn, Erlangen, Essen, Ludwigshafen, Mainz, Neumarkt and Nuremberg called for a stronger recognition of local climate protection measures and their contribution to the German energy transition. Based on local experiences reported by several participants, a demand on stronger regulations by legislation and further assistance to cities and towns addressed to the European and national level has been made.

From the perspective of the speakers of the Covenant Club Joachim Lorenz, City Councillor of Munich and Eckart Würzner, Mayor of Heidelberg, as well as other participants, energy-saving measures in existing buildings are particularly urgent and need stronger support. The participants of the Covenant Club agreed to have an in-depth compilation of municipal demands for the implementation of local climate protection measures drawn up.

Since the launch of the Covenant Club Germany in October 2011 in Heidelberg, German signatories of the Covenant of Mayors network and exchange experience in the frame of this platform. The fourth Covenant Club meeting will take place on 15 November 2012 in Offenburg.
