High level meeting on the Covenant of Mayors in The Hague on 16 May

The Covenant of Mayors is today referred to as THE mainstream European institutional initiative engaging local authorities for the EU’s energy and climate objectives. With more than 4,300 Mayors and a growing number of submitted SEAPs, the initiative shows the essential role played by local authorities in the path towards sustainable energy. However, Covenant Signatories need adequate support to implement their ambitious plans, stay on course towards meeting their CO2 reduction target and ensure lasting impacts on the ground. One of the main challenges of the forthcoming period is the consolidation of the initiative - in partnership and in coordination with all levels of government.

During the debate committed Mayors will have their say, directly or through representatives of the national Covenant Clubs. They will be invited to share their perspectives regarding the future of the Covenant of Mayors initiative, the challenges they face and needs for reaching their ambitions and ensuring financing. The objective is to find together a way ahead for 2020 and beyond!

A panel of Covenant signatories and elected representatives involved in national Covenant of Mayors Clubs will debate on these issues in the presence of the European Commission on the 16th of May in The Hague (NL) in the framework of the Climate Alliance Annual Event.
